In a late Thursday post on the social media platform Truth Social, the former Republican president, who is hoping to win back the White House, stated, "If you get rid of TikTok, Facebook... will double their business." He further stated that he does not want Facebook to be "doing better."
Regarding whether Trump has a position on the proposal, the campaign remained silent for the time being. Parent company Meta META.O of Facebook declined to comment.
On Thursday, the Energy and Commerce Committee voted 50-0 to adopt legislation aimed at taking down TikTok, which has around 170 million users in the United States.
ByteDance would have 165 days under the bill's terms to divest TikTok; if it didn't, Apple AAPL.O, Google GOOGL.O, and other app stores would not be allowed to lawfully offer TikTok or host programmes under ByteDance's management.
